i hope max is doing better today. I know it can seem hard sometimes when you have a pet in hospital. At local vet hosps i feel they should be able to give you whatever information you want at whatever time or be able to leave a message for the vet to call you back. At my emergency hospital sometimes its just not possible to get a full report on the pets progress because we simply do not have the time to chat because we have so many animals to take care of. more time on the phone is less time with the animals. However, since you said your hosp is smaller and not busy i do not see why the doc couldn't have gotten on teh phone with you to report how Max was doing. It should be common practice to get a phone call update from the vet at least once a day in the morning or at night to tell you how he is.
Also a note about visiting: while you may think its a good idea, most times it is not. Sure the pet is VERY happy to see you in most cases and you may think it help him out but a lot of times once you leave the pet is crying and getting himself all worked up because he still wants to see you. This can not be good if the pet is sick and we need to keep him calm. its harder on them to see you for 10 minutes and then have you leave then to not see you at all while they are there. just something to keep in mind.
good luck!
