size You are right to be leery of this statement..canine genetic's is no different in this area as with humans. IF it were true all a breeder would need to do is get a small male and every pup would never be oversized..does that make sense? The bloodline, which are the genes determine the size of the dog. There is a term called "prepotent"...a dog that reproduces himself over and over to some degree..but never 100%. I have had males who when bred to a large female will reduce the size in 90% of the pups...but these males were from small Yorkies, from small Yorkies, from small Yorkies. It is also not true if you breed a 3 pound male to a 12 pound female, you add the poundage and divide by two..making the pups about 7 pounders. You will get small, medium and large. 50% genes from the sires family and 50% from the dam. |
