I seriously hope your 6-year old son is not walking a golden retriever unsupervised. What if the dog suddenly takes off? Your son could be dragged into the street and hit by a car. The dog can also easily get away from a 6-year old and run away and also get hit by a car. As well behaved as a dog may be, things can happen. Children and dogs should never be left alone together.
So far as feeding and taking care of an animal, that's great! Kids should be taught some responsibility with family pets, but you in no way can completely rely on him to be the sole caregiver for these pets. If he forgets or doesn't want to feed them or take them out to potty, it's your responsibility. You are also financially responsible for these animals. A child is never legally responsibile for a pet - the adult is.
Do not take this dog back only because your son misses her - you already made the choice to sell her - do the right thing and let her stay where she is. You're son will get over it and hopefully you won't make the same mistake in the future
