It's not the same as the food bowl....my three have their own food bowls, but all share the water bowl without problems....even my cats drink from it ! Considering I got Tara 3.5years before Casper, and him 2years before Tammy came, the water bowl was never an issue.
They are happy to take turns and wait until the other has finished.
Tara is the only one who lifts the heavy pottery bowl and takes it to me when it's empty though ! She is tiny and 4lbs, but lifts it as she likes a full bowl !
Hopefully Sherlock won't be possesive about only just water....a new bowl wouldn't do any harm though. Good Luck
