I saw some fuzzy socks like that at the Dollar Tree, they had lots of colors. They probably aren't the best of quality, but at least if they didn't last you wouldn't be out much money! I would sew around the edge with a zig-zag stitch to prevent fraying, and that way it would still have a little stretch to it.
