For those of you who do not have the convenience of being at home w/ your puppy to crate train, how did you do it???

I would love to crate train but I know that I could not expect my new puppy coming to stay in there that long. I've heard about pee pads (?) and newspaper but doesn't this teach the dog that it's okay to "use it" in the house??? Please help!!!
