Royal canine's master marketing 1) Royal Canine is very high in fat and oils - great for show coats - bad for pet Yorkies who spend most of the day lying around the house and tend to be on the plump side - think:diabetes, cushings, heart disease.
2) Royal Canine has spent fortunes trying to get Yorkie breeders hooked on the products.
- Here's what I mean: I've competed and/or attended Yorkie Specialties since R.C. first introduced thier Yorkie food. The first year, they hosted a cocktail hour, gave out free copies of thier dog encyclopedia, free 5 pound bags of food, free tote bags, coupons and even signed breeders up to be part of a "club" in which they could get more discounts and coupons - and here's the kicker - FOR PUPPY BUYERS. (the following year, in Orlando - they oudid themselves by hosting a boat ride/casino night!).
Makes perfect sense from a marketing perspective. To a new puppy buyer, 1) the breeder is god - what she says you do, you do and 2) the puppy is already weaned (i.e. hooked) on the stuff when its brough home to its new owner!
Now I am not saying that R.C. is a terrible food to give your dog. It's O.K. As I mentioned, probably not great for housedogs. I would be dishonest to say I havent' fed it to my own dogs. My mother, father and I all attended the show in Reading. So we EACH came home with a five pound bag of the stuff. So for the next three months, my dogs eat nothing but R.C.! Until, I noticed the expanding waist lines! |
