Hokule'a described the same problem I had when I put the blade attachement on. You do have to clip one side and pull it over to the other.

Even after getting the attachments (guards) on I am never able to get an even cut. Is there a proper way to use them. I used the clippers just as I would without the guard, from front to back and it always ends up choppy.
