Help! Fleas! Several weeks ago my 10-month old Yorkie picked up fleas - evidently he went under one bush too many on our walks. Anyway, by the time they were discovered they had spread all over him. I went out and bought the quickest thing I could find (it was late one night) - Hartz 4-in-1 from the supermarket. It was for dogs 4-17 lb (he is 4.4). I put it on his neck and down his spine as directed (works like Frontline, Advantix etc.) and he immediately vomited - within minutes. He then proceeded to become less and less active for a couple of days and vomited on and off. On Monday I called the vet, who said to wash the Hartz off, let him recover then come in and get shampoo. On Tuesday, despite being bathed, he was still ill and the vet's office (vet was on vacation) said to take him to the emergency vet clinic - but we did get him to eat and within a day he was fine. So I got the shampoo (Myconex - "Top of the line" the vet said) and left it on 10 minutes as directed. But the fleas were still there. I had to spray this puppy flea spray from petco on him constantly (pyrethins). I sprayed, vacuumed, washed in the house, and not it's gotten quite cold (58) in the house...but they were still there. I was bitten to death too. The vet finally agreed to give me a systemic (he said since he'd reacted badly to the Hartz he didn't want to give him Frontline etc.) so he gave me Protocall, told me to use half a tube. When Sargie didn't have a reaction they told me to put the other half on the next day. I did - but he still had fleas. He was away from three days in the pet hotel and when he came home still had them (as he has never gotten them there, these had to be eggs on him that hatched whilst he was there) - evidently Protocall doesn't kill eggs. I have sprayed and bathed him with the shampoo since and seem to have made quite a dent in the flea population but this a.m. I found another one on his head, although he had no other signs - no flea dirt, etc. - anywhere. Does anyone have any hints for what works? Several people I work with - with different breeds - say that Advantix, Frontline etc. aren't even working as well as they did. Are the fleas becoming immune?
My cousin emailed me that putting natural yeast in the dog's food - once he's rid of them - will prevent a reoccurence - it worked for all her animals. Anyone heard of this? |
