Short Cords I just whelped a maltese litter with my sister. And my goodness-this girl's puppies had the shortest cords I've seen. I'm not sure if she just wasnt expelling the placenta right away or what. But after the pups was born, they were right at her, with about 1/2 inches (or less) of cord to work with. With no sign of the placenta coming with another contraction, we broke the sac, syringed and stimulated the puppies and clamped and cut the cord (normally I like to put a big clamp at the placenta so it won't get lost and will be accounted for) I had to be careful not cut her each time.
I've had short cords before, but all 4 of them were short, too weird I thought. Or maybe she just wasn't delivering the placentas right after. It took alot of quick thinking and I'm sure there could have been a very different turnout if it had been the blind leading the blind. That's why I recommend whelping mentors, especially in the beginning.
BTW, these are some of the healthies puppies ever. Nursing so strong, great weights and so gorgeous. |
