I watch the puppys and go by their and mom's timeline as far as weaning. For confining the pups but offering mom freedom we built a gate that mom can jump over but pups can't. The only thing is you have to watch the other dogs in the home as they now have access to the pups as well. As far as determing coat, I wait and evaluate that at 8 weeks when I evaluate them for structure and temperment.
