Yor not going to like this, but I think your mom is right. Only because its your focal point wall. But I do like the idea of the contrasting doorways. Maybe you could paint both walls and then do the doorways.??!! I don't think it will be too dark, and anyway dark doesn't mean it will look small. I have a average size bedroom (12 X 17) and I have some very large furniture. I painted my walls a light chocolate. All my accents are off white and I get a lot on complaints.
I'm sure what ever you decide to do, It will look great and if for some reason it doesn't, Well its only paint.. I painted my kitchen purple once, I lived with it for about three days, and then I painted it a celery green, I love it!!
