Breeding Well, my fears about my son and daughter-in-law planning to breed their Yorkie, Samantha, have come true. I inquired (gently, this is my daughter-in-law remember) when they were going to have her spayed and my son said they plan to breed her "a couple of times" first. They have friends who have Yorkies and they have puppies from time to time. I have no idea what the situation is with their friends, but fear that they just have a male and female and have puppies. Samantha is 9 months old, almost 10 months, and she hasn't come in season yet. I don't know what a 9-month-old Yorkie should look like, but I don't think she's exceptionally pretty. Her ears don't stand up and her coat is thin. She weighs 6.5 pounds. She's still a puppy and has lots of energy and is very sweet. She isn't potty trained yet and still likes to bite fingers and toes. She is well loved and gets good care and lots of attention. She comes to my house with my granddaughter and I just love her to pieces! My son and daughter-in-law both work and having puppies won't be nearly the fun they think it will be. I don't think they have any idea what they would be getting into, the problems with a small mama and tiny puppies, the multitude of things that need to be considered and things that can go wrong. I've raised puppies and I wouldn't even think about it with a Yorkie. This is their first dog and neither of them has ever raised puppies.
I don't think there's anything I can say to change their minds. Just sharing my concerns. I don't give advice unless I'm asked. They know what I think about breeding and especially about small mamas. They have heard my "speech" about all the puppies that come into the world without proper preparation, all the testing that should be done and all the considerations. They will do their best to give the puppies good care and find good homes for them, but it just makes me cringe to even think about it! Maybe they will change their minds before the opportunity to breed her comes along. They don't plan to breed her until she's older, which is good. I will continue to make speeches without being critical or giving unsolicited advice. Maybe something I say will strike a chord! Wish me luck. |
