On Wednesday, KFDM looked into the Beaumont animal shelter to see how animals are cared for there and what will happen with these dogs.
There are several dogs at the Beaumont Animal Control Center, but authorities won't let us show the 18 that were seized from a property owner in Fannett.
According to Dan Parker, “It's evidence in a case with the sheriff's department. We don't want to do anything to compromise the case.”
KFDM was on the scene when the Yorkshire Terriers and Pomeranians were brought in.
Deputies seized them from a building and travel trailer where investigators say they were living in horrible conditions in cages stacked one on top of another.
Now they're living among rows of kennels. The supervisor says animal seizures happen more often than most people realize.
“Horses that you can count all the ribs on, dogs that were just.. By right should be 50-60 pounds,” said Parker.
The dogs are fed and watered and taken care of every day.
Parker says some of these dogs are strays while others belong to someone.
"We're required to hold a stray animal for 72 hours. An animal that has an identity tag we're required to hold for 5 days,” he said.
After that they're available for adoption, but only for a few days. Only one out of 50 finds a new home.
While most dogs don't have a judge on their side, the dogs seized Tuesday will be here until the court orders otherwise.
“The best case scenario would be for the judge to let us adopt them out to whoever wants them,” said Parker.
Parker says the dogs will be checked by a vet on Thursday. The owner of the 18 dogs is set to appear before a judge next Tuesday.
He could release them to the owner or allow the county to put them up for adoption. |
