It absolutely does depend on the trainer, but that would be true whatever the facility.
Sounds like that trainer is strictly a "big dog" person, or someone who has limited experience with small dogs or perhaps a bad experience. It does seem a bit unprofessional that she would make you feel that uncomfortable in the first class.
Is she the only trainer there? If not, perhaps you could switch to another trainer.
Archie and Willie have been through several classes ---- puppy, beginner and intermediate obedience and are now taking the click-a-trick class at our local Petsmart, all with the same trainer. She is great and my two absolutely love her.
