Del.icio.us | Digg | Print Story | E-Mail Story | Font Size KFDM News has video of more than a dozen dogs seized by law enforcement officers from a suspected puppy mill in Fannett.

The dogs are in poor condition, according to Brent Weaver with the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office. Officers say the dogs were stacked in cages, one on top of another.

The dogs have been taken to the Beaumont Animal Control Office on Pine Street. A court hearing in the case is set for next week. The outcome will determine if the dogs are placed for adoption.

NEWS RELEASE FROM JEFFERSON COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE:

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Livestock Deputy is investigating the care and conditions of more than a dozen small dogs being kept at a location in Fannett, Jefferson County. According to information obtained from the Livestock Deputy Charlie Melancon, patrol deputies were dispatched to a location off Highway 365 in Fannett several months ago in reference to a suspicious person. Upon arrival, deputies discovered a large number of dogs being kept at the location. According to the Livestock Deputy, he was notified by the Sheriff's Patrol Deputies to come out to the location to investigate the conditions and care of the animals.

The Livestock Deputy then spoke with the homeowner, providing him with information in reference to the law and instructing him to provide better care and living conditions for the animals. It appears those instructions as it relates to the law were not followed and the conditions of the shelter and care of the animals were not to standard, according to the law.

As a result, the Livestock Deputy submitted a seizure warrant through Judge Ray Chesson’s office. This resulted in the seizure of the animals at the location in Fannett at approximately 11:00 a.m. this date. The animals were taken to the Beaumont Animal Control on Pine Street where they will be cared for until the JP 4 Court makes a decision on care and custody of the animals. The court date is set for Tuesday November 6 at 10:00 a.m. at JP 4’s Office on Hwy 365 in Hamshire, Jefferson County.

The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is diligently enforcing laws regarding the care and conditions of which animals are maintained by owners. This is just one of the many duties of our Livestock Deputy.

No other information at this time.
