Well when I had Codie neutered, he did not wear the head cone thingy (whatever it's called) and neither did Katie when she was spayed. However, when Codie had surgery for his luxated patella (dislocated knee cap), he did wear the cone thing on his head. I got home from work the next day and took the cone off to give him a break and went into the bathroom. I came out less than 3 minutes later and Codie had pulled out 1 stitch! It was oozing blood so I rushed him back to the vet and he had to be given a shot and re-stitched. So I think it's better to leave it on a few days unless you're home and watch him ALL THE TIME because it takes only a few minutes for these little guys to rip out the stitches.
I think belly bands hurt because they press on the area that is sensitive from the stitches.
