Yes it's true, I was asked once for my SS# over the phone, When I asked what office could I meet them at because I never give out information over the phone, they hung up on me.
Heads up to those with kids in school. In some schools your kids ID is there SS#,
Not a good idea, they had it like that 2 years ago at SDSU, and many had theirs stolen. It's now changed there, but many schools are still using the ss#'s
