I use Adobe Photoshop CS2 for everything graphic wise. But yeah, you have to buy it and it's uber expensive. Unless you're a student, sometimes you can get a discount on it.

I checked out some programs on www.cnet.com (select downloads)

You can download a lot of free trials. It'd give you a chance to try the program, maybe even complete what you need to on it.
