So basically the dog is getting praised and loved for being insecure which is not what you want.

If you think she's really gonna be bad, get a sedative from the vet. You need to start giving it to her a few hours or at least a day before hand for her a stay calm. You can also put her in a room of the house that you think will be the quietest. i live in a basement and its very quiet down here. i hardly ever here thunderstorms or fireworks so my dog never gets scared of loud noises. If she does hear something and startles i tell her its ok and then go back to whatever i was doing or just ignore her.

I never thought of it like that - thanks so much. I realise now that I would be encouraging her reaction. Unfortunately, there isn't a room that is quieter than another in our home. We listened in every room in the house, when they let off some fireworks the day before yesterday, and they sound just as loud whichever room you are in. We have a few days before the big night and I will try the ignoring thing and see if she calms down.

She is such a little darling and it always amazes me how trusting animals can be even though they have had unhappy experiences with owners in the past. She is sitting on my desk, on her fleece blanket, watching me on the computer!

Thanks again for your advice, I have so much to learn!
