My pup used to just go in the crate when I was trying to crate train her-- she came out of a rescue situation too and was sadly much too used to standing around in her own poo to really care. She would also run wherever I wasn't in the house and poo whenever she got the chance. Eventually I gave up on crate-training as a full solution and just used a leash to keep her more or less tethered to me so that the very moment she began to look like she needed to go out, I could grab her and run her outside. I would literally have her within four feet of me at all times when I was at home. We had to do that for about a month, but eventually the constant, constant reinforcement finally seemed to work, and things snapped right into place for her. She now only rarely has an accident inside, and I've restarted crate training too-- she seems to have forgotten that it was once OK to potty in her cage, and things are going really smoothly now.
