From what I understand, when the shelters get the yorkies, or s**tzu's, etc... they then call the nearest yorkie rescue. And they're never hardly seen at the shelter unless the rescue's couldn't take them. Hence the reason of all the mixes in the shelters and less purebreds. If all of the neglected animals were in there, I believe it would be half and half. I don't think it's so much the dogs fault, but the owner.
I think the problem is pet overpopulation, uncontrolled breeding. People not caring and not being selective in their breeding practices. BYBer's out to make a dime, with 15 breeding dogs far from the standard, sold to the first one with the money.
