Being from a pet store, they learn to pee in the cage. If your kennel is a big one it might confuse him if u leave him in there and he potties in it. My suggestion is to buy a small portable crate that is only big enough for him lay down in. You simply can not leave him in the crate for hours at a time.
If u have the ability, I would try letting him out with you in the house, putting a harness on him and then a leash, I would step on the leash end when he tries to run off and get his attention to keep him with you. Make sure you are taking him out every 30 min or more if necessary. I had one yorkie that I did this with and it did help.
