How old is he? The first groomings can be a little stressful, naturally. But I will share my story.
We took Reggie (10 years old) to a recommended groomer as a puppy. She seemed okay. But he had to stay there a really long time like yours did. Each time we'd pick him up, he'd be withdrawn and lethargic until the next day. Then one time, I had to take him to a different groomer because of a timing conflict. He came home completely normal. I took him to that new place a second time. They asked how he had done. I told them the difference. They asked where he'd gone before and asked me very politely (without saying anything negative) to continue to bring him to them. Have ever since. These wonderful ladies have since opened their own holistic groomers shop, and Reggie has come home FINE ever since. They only allow the dog to stay for the time of their appointment - no waiting in kennels. (He still hates to go, but it doesn't change his personality). Coby got a much better start there and loves them.
Then just this week, that original groomer has been arrested for throwing antifreeze-laced meat over the fence at one or two of her competitors, where dogs ate it. I don't know if she is guilty - I only know she did not care for my dog the way my current groomers do and created a groomer phobia that his new groomer has lovingly dealt with for 10 years.
The vet and groomer are your dogs caregivers outside of your house. Please don't take groomers lightly and choose very carefully.............. |
