A Yorkshire Terrier is a toy breed that is supposed to be 7lbs and under. You will find that they can range in size however - from 1lb - 20lbs sometimes. There is no such thing as a "teacup", "micro", or "standard" yorkie - just a toy-breed yorkie. A yorkie by standard only comes in a blue/black & Gold/Tan color, although you'll find that the colors of each yorkie can range quite a bit too. Some are very dark in color and others are very light. Some have a lot of gold and some are very silvery. Although not of standard, there are yorkies that are not typical yorkie colors - such as chocolates, all-golds, and partis.

I'm glad you are doing your research first. Yorkies are wonderful little dogs but aren't for everyone. So continue to research and make sure they are right for you before you decide to buy one. This site will give you tons of information and be sure to ask any questions you might have here - you'll learn a lot.

To find a good breeder, you can actually start right here at YT. Look in the showing and breeding sections and there is also a nursery section and yorkies for sale section. You can also attend dog shows to find breeders, look on the AKC website, as well as the website for the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America. Stay away from petstores as the puppies come from puppymills and backyard breeders. And be patient - sometimes it takes a while to find the right puppy

Purchasing from backyard breeders, pet shops, and puppymills perpetuates the suffering of other dogs.
Educate yourself and buy from reputable breeders or rescue.
