It's really very similar to humans. Freddy had to have shots twice a day after meals and we tested his urin every morning with test strips (I hope that by now, doggie technology has caught up with human and there's a better way to test as urin is very inexact).
Just like in humans, there are dogs who carry the genetic markers for diabetes. However, proper diet, nutriotion and above all else, WEIGHT can ward off he onset of insulin dependance. Most Yorkies who become diabetic do so when approaching thier senior years, and a good percentage of them are overweight.
