Yes, I think hay is really good, but I wouldn't want to lay on it, so we have used hay (straw) and then a pillow on top, and then maybe a blanket on the pillow. I know that pillows are better than blankets too - it provides more insulation betweeen the cold ground and the kitty/dog. I like to keep a blanket on the pillow or straw because they can get "down in" the blanket, so that it is up around them, or even on top of them. My Yorkie boys (who do NOT stay outside) are masters at getting UNDER the blankets.
Also, the light bulb will really keep it alot warmer too.
And I know exactly what you mean - even though we live in Texas and the cold weather is nothing compared to up north, our furkids are not used to the cold and so we have to protect them, even when it seems a little silly - because IT'S NOT!
