Technically, it can be done, but isn't the best idea and some vets won't do it. One of the females in our family had it done due to special circumstances and other than being allergic to the stitches used (who'd have thought that?) she was perfectly fine. But again, it is not the norm and if you can wait without the possiblity of a male getting to her, it would be better.
