I was in the gifted program all throughout elementary, middle, and high school. I loved it all. I wasn't bored and we got to do SO MANY neat things! It put me one step ahead of everyone each year. I just graduated from my undergrad, so Im sure they've changed it A LOT since then, but I say GO FOR IT!
