I was in one when I was younger and I loved it. There were only about 5 kids out of our entire grade of 200 let in.
Even though it was extra work, I didn't mind because I loved the challenge. The everyday classroom work bored me. The way our program was set up is we went to it all day once a week.
We did things like logic problems (I loved those!), educational units, research reports, computer games, etc. Mainly our program allowed us to think "outside the box" and be creative. For example, one fun thing we did was each team was allowed use of several trashbags, cardboard box, and tape and then we had to build a canoe that would float and whichever floated longest with one of our members in it, won the competition.
The only downside was I did get made fun of occassionaly for being a "smart kid" but the benefits were much greater. |
