Most pups are pretty much weaned by 6 weeks old. They stay with mom because she trains them in doggy manners, She can mix the milk replacer with puppy food if she wants to but as long as he's on a high quality puppy food and gets plenty of fresh water it shouldn't be necessary. If he's been nursing up to this point start with a soupy consistancy and gradually get thicker. I find that most of my babies just love the hard small bites while they're teething.
