What kind (make and model number) is your machine? I will see if I can look it up to show you where the tension dial is. The 5 you are referring to is the length of the stitch. The tension dial loosens the stitch. When you sew, the bottom side of the fabric will show the bobbin thread and the top side is the needle thread. The needle thread is what you want to loosen (only for gathering). It will make the threads looser so when you pull to gather, it ius much easier. When you pull the thread, you only pull the bottom thread, not both threads at once. The tension adjustement is usually on the left hand end of the machine or on the left front. If you can send me the make and model I will look it up for you.
