I got a weird paypal email once and I did click on the link but luckily I looked at the "http://" address that popped up on the new screen and it was a bunch of mumbo jumbo. It wasn't paypal it was a scam. It asked for all of my info, password, bank info, etc. I reported it to paypal and they immediately emailed me back and said they would look into it. Make sure you don't give them any info. I would forward the email to paypal (don't reply to the most likely fake email you got) and ask them to check into it. Good luck and congrats on being cautious instead of just believing the email. They are expecting people to just trust that it's actually from paypal and to want to clear up their account.
