I do think that it is realistic to never have to have them professionally cleaned. If you are using petzlife and brushing already, there isn't much more you can do. A small amount of buildup may not hurt a thing. Maybe just try scraping it. The only problem with scraping is that I think it is best to have them cleaned after to smooth out the surface.
