Hi, congratulations on your puppy. The idea of crating him, like you said, it because he will not pee in his crate. Don't put him in the crate if he wees where he isn't supposed to. The idea of putting him in the crate is so that he holds his pee, not to punish him or lock him up after he pees in inappropriate places.
So, as far as crate training goes, you put him in his crate and make sure you watch him. If it's about time that he has to pee and he wants to get out of the crate (whines/whimpers/some signal), take him out side the crate, and put him outside(or pee pad where ever you want him to pee). He'll sniff around and pee. When he does that, praise him and give him treat or something, right after he pees.
After he pees, come back to your room. Do not play with him outside after he pees. If, when you go outside, he doesn't pee within 5~7 minutes, take him back into the crate, wait 10 min or so, take him back outside to pee. You have to make sure going outside is not associated with playing, he has to understand he's going outside to pee. Of course, if you went outside and he pee-ed, you can come back in and then go outside to play with him if you want =) Hope that helps!
