Five months old is just a baby puppy! It really isn't that old, in my opinion. There are many breeders who will not part w/ their pups until they're 4 mths old, so I don't see a lot of difference there. And, I never expect much training from the breeder - maybe they know what a pad is and hit it sometimes, but that's about it.
He sounds like a sweetie - and remember that he is just a baby who was taken out of his environment, very scary. Just take some deep breaths, remember how short and special puppyhood is, give lots of love, and remember that he's just a vulnerable little guy - who wants so badly to please you.
Hope you have a better 2nd day! A 14 hour drive would be tough on anyone! Hang in there.
