no, but crating will help him feel secure. When these little guys get in a big open place with a lot going on, they tend to get scared and nervous. crates should be a small, comfortable, safe place for them...a place that they go to feel secure. If you do it right, he will love his crate. (maggie LOVES her crate and is very protective of it...it is HER place...HER cozie home) and it will also help control the accidents. MOST (not all) dogs will not urinate or defecate in small confined places. so keeping him in there when you cannot be watching him closely will teach him to hold it. AS SOON as you let him out, go STRAIGHT to the place he is supposed to go to use the bathroom. no play time between the crate and that place...straight there to potty. then you can play for a bit...then potty again..then when you can't watch him, BACK to the crate. this teaches him to hold it until the right time to go potty. take him to potty about every 2 hours and praise him tremendously when he goes out.

i know you have another dog and have trained that dog...but every dog is different. my cocker was SUPER easy to train. but other dogs i have had were a lot more work. i had an italian greyhound that would pee and pooh in his crate and play in it...not matter how small the crate was. he was almost impossible to train. but diligence and consistency paid off after 10 months!!!!!! yep..10 months.

you just never know...but when you take in a new pup...not matter what the age...you have to be wiling to do the work
