I agree 100%. I was given a car for my 16th and plan to buy my daughter one when she turns 16. I don't see anything wrong with it if you can afford it and your child is responsible and trustworthy enough to own a car.
As far as a Porsche, surly he was joking? Maybe he thought he's shock you by asking so when he asked for a Toyota it would sound very reasonable.
