My friend plucks her shih tzu's ears and he dosent finch or even wake up for that matter..she is goooooooooooood...I leave it to the groomer and she says my furkids dont mind it at all..which is nice..so there must be ways to do it that dosent make it painful or maybe it gets easier the more its done..who knows lol..
