Default Doggy door and wee-wee pad question

I have an almost 9 week old Yorkie that I've been working on potty training outside with. The previous owner of my house had cats and there is a small pet door. It doesn't go outside though it goes through a wall in to the pool room. I've been wondering about enclosing a small area around the pet door on the other side and putting a wee-wee pad down. Obviously I can't allow my puppy full run of the pool room because of the danger involved with drowning but a sturdy enclosure would solve that problem. Anyone have any input on this idea? Should I just continue with the outside training until my puppy is a bit older to use the pet door? Not really sure how I would monitor what he was doing once through the pet door. I'd have to get him to go through it then go around in to the pool room. Is this something that would be easier to teach him once he was a little older?
