I think you can rename a dog easily. My two know their names, but they also answer to numerous "pet" names. If you take in a stray, you don't know it's name, so it has to get a new name. Some people say getting a new name is good in case there are some bad memories associated with the other name. I took in a little miniature poodle a few weeks ago, and she picked up on the name I gave her in less than 24 hours.
