Here is the German version...
2 lbs. lean ground beef
3 hard dry buns
1 chopped onion
All season salt
1/2 tsp. thyme
2 eggs
soak buns in cold water until really soft and press most of the water out again
mix it with the ground beef, the onions, the eggs and the spices
form small patties with your hands and fry them in a pan with vegetable oil until dark brown on both sides
serve with potato salad and call it
