We don't have an eating area in the kitchen either, but the girls are not allowed in at any time. I'll listen for them to wander in when we are watching TV and call them out.
It's funny to see them when we get home. I'll be in the kitchen putting away groceries or something and hubby will let them out of their kennels. They come racing to see me... and pull up quickly where the carpet ends so they won't go in the kitchen. Then they wiggle until I come over to see them.
