Are you sure your vet didn't suggest Benadryl? I've heard of that being used to calm a dog before grooming or a car trip.

If you do try Benadryl, try it at home first to see how he reacts. Some dogs have the opposite reaction of what you want. I gave it to Spike for a long car trip and he completely freaked out. It was horrible. My vet said this is not an uncommon reaction. It works great for a lot of dogs but just make sure it works for your's ahead of time.
