So glad to see another who trains dogs to stay out of the kitchen! We grew up this way but seem to be in the minority.

I found persistence is key. Using the stay command helps, also. Sometimes they just have it in their head to follow you in, though. My girls did better at our condo when they could see me in the kitchen. Now they don't like it as much because I'm usually blocked from their view so they tend to peek in.
