The bands are just ribbon from the fabric store. I really like them (looks wise) because they have a shiney sheen to them just like the pups' black hair. We've had a little trouble with the knots staying tied, but I think we finally got it. Three knots are better than two. You can use just about anything I would think. If I would have kept (or could find) my big bag of yarn, I would have done that...but the ribbon is prettier!
