My two absolutely hated getting their nails cut but I kept at it and now they 'tolerate' it and get a special treat afterwards. I also watch for that 'black dot' indicating the quick and stop when I see it getting larger. As for nicking the quick, yes, I have done it - but we survived.
Oh, someone had recommended wrapping them up in a towel with only one paw sticking out at a time - it does help if you have a squirmy one
