when you're in one of the forum sections, for example, General, on the left of all the threads is an envelope. If it's red, it means it's a hot thread. If it's tan, it's not. If the envelope is open with paper sticking out of it, that means there are posts in that thread you haven't read. Once you've read all the posts of a non-hot thread the envelope will be blue and closed. A hot thread is basically just a hot topic. Lots of discussion within it.
