Funny you should mention the lump, I just had my senior, Spanky checked for that very same thing. This is what the Vet told me. All the ribs are connected to the central sternum, except for the last one or two. These float free and have cartiladge tissue on the end, which usually "points" inwards. However, in some cases, it grows outward and can be felt under the skin as a very definite lump. This might very well be what your Frankie has. I know I got such a fright when I first felt it on Spanky, but my Vet assured me it was nothing to worry about. Hope this helps,
