The Smiths' washing machine is old. It is so inefficient that it uses $40 more electricity each month than a new washing machine would use. The Smiths are thinking about buying a new washing machine for $1250
If the Smiths buy the new washing machine, how many months will it take for the savings on their energy bill to equal the cost of the new washing machine? It will take 32 months. After 31 months, the new washing machine will have saved an amount ($1240) almost equal to its cost (31 months × $40 per month = $1240) So it will take one more month to save more than the cost of the washing machine (32 months × $40 per month = $1280).
Another way to solve this problem is to divide $1240 by $40/month, which gives 31.25 months.
After talking it over with my chief consultant (Monday) ... I'll let you have it ...you have a point there.
but since we pay monthly ... it would take 32 months ... not a fraction of a month .I should have given you multiple choice answers to choose from .... but I cannot present a good argument for you NOT to have the right answer ...here have another star!!!! .
